Physical Appearance

Therese was the tallest in her family at 1.62m.  She was often known as 'the tall English girl' because of her deep blue eyes and long blond hair. (Source: Descouvemont Pierre, Therese and Lisieux, Novalis, Canada, 1996.)

Therese had a beautiful engaging smile "an angelic expression"*

bullet

"Something heaven like in her eyes......She appears to be more of heaven than of earth"*

M. Lahaye a pharmacist form Lisieux was present at the Carmel during Therese's profession ceremony and had an excellent opportunity to study her face. "her forehead was slightly convex, the nose short, the mouth almost large, the chin quite large and rounded and although her cheeks were not hollow, her cheek-bones were a little prominent....Her color was like new ivory, transparent with a hint of amber and rose color.  She seemed slender despite her heavy religious habit."

Herself

bullet

Therese had a love for pictures and reading.

bullet

She loved the country side, wildflowers and animals especially the sound of birds singing.

bullet

As a child she loved to be on a swing.  She loved skipping rope too.

bullet

Therese loved to collect a variety of different things to decorate her bedroom with e.g pious articles, games, dolls and an aviary.

bullet

At school, Therese did not enjoy noisy games.  She preferred to tell stories or go off quietly by herself.

bullet

Therese loved history, geography and Catechism.  She found math and spelling difficult.

bullet

As a youngster, she was extremely sensitive and would cry very easily.

bullet

Therese had a pet dog (a Spaniel) called Tom.

bullet

Therese was frightened of spiders.

bullet

Therese enjoyed keeping a diary of important dates in her life.

bullet

Therese inherited the ability to mimic people from her father.

bullet

The Carmelite community enjoyed Therese's imitations and stories.  She had a great sense of humor.

bullet

Therese worked in the laundry, refectory, Sacristy, art studio, gate house and also took charge of the Novices.

bullet

Therese admitted that she found the meditation of the Rosary difficult...even though her love for Our Lady was great.

bullet

Some of the Sisters complained that she was 'slow at doing her tasks' and called her 'the Nanny Goat'.  It was exactly these Sisters that Therese tried hard to befriend and love as an offering to Jesus.

bullet

Her favorite saints were St. Agnes, St. Cecilia, Bl. Theophane Venard and St. Joan of Arc.

bullet

Therese found milk and other foods difficult to digest, yet she ate and drank what was given to her without complaint.

bullet

Therese suffered from the cold experienced during the winters in the Convent but never complained.  She suffered from chilblains.

bullet

Therese often requested that her clothing as collected from the linen room would be the most threadbare and oldest.

bullet

Her perfect obedience and calm manner earned her the name "Little Sister Amen".

bullet

She occasionally had doubts about the existence  of heaven.  These were part of her inner trials. I believe Therese had her answer when she obviously 'saw something glorious at the point of her death'.  She died with a beautiful smile on her face.
